My disposal starts when you place what looks like a splashguard into the hole. It stops when you remove this piece. The handle broke off leaving the disposal running until I cut the power at the fuse box and pried the remaining piece out. The disposal would work fine if I can find a new starter/splash guard. (I don't know what to call it)

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm guessing this was installed when the house was built in the 80's.

Can you please supply your model number?

It should be on the unit under the sink on a tag with the serial number.
