Default Whirlpool Gas Dryer won't tumble
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LGR5848EQ2
Age: More than 10 years

What is wrong with my Whirlpool Gas dryer? I put a load in the dryer and it just hums--drum won't spin, and motor hums like it's struggling to spin the drum. I tried it again until it finally just stopped. Few minutes later, I cut the load in half and it worked fine but motor sounds like it is having a hard time spinning the drum, but it dried my clothes. I turned on the dryer while empty and works fine. Is the problem the motor, or the belt? I don't think I overloaded the dryer since I wash the same load every week. Please help and thanks in advance!

It is either the motor or the belt. I would replace the belt first. It is hard to tell sitting from here. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

My wife insisted that we do our weekly laundry before I mess with the dryer. After the second drying with just a small load, the dryer completely stop tumbling. There was a burnt smell in the garage, so I was thinking the motor is finally out.
I opened the dryer and the belt was still intact. I also opened up the blower housing and found a lot of dust, lint, paper clips, screws, and the plastic thingy for my dress shirts collar. Man it was filthy! The blower wheel was also nicked all the way around--so I know I have to replace it.
I was able to remove the belt, drum and pulley with no problems. Removing the blower fan was a B*tch! I literally had to destroy the blower wheel to remove it.
Tomorrow, I will buy a new motor, belt, blower wheel and pulley.

I ended up buying the parts on Friday but didn't get to work on it 'til Sunday. Within 15 minutes, I got the dryer working! And it felt GOOOD! On top of that, I got my parts for wholesale price($140=motor, pulley, belt and blower wheel)--thanks to Marie from Reliable Parts Inc in San Francisco.
That Sunday, we did 3 full loads and so far so good! I couldn't believe I fixed it!!!
How much money (LABOR) do you think I saved by fixing it myself?

Great job Dude, you probably saved with the mark up on the parts about $50.00, and labor and service call, at my rate it would be 77.95. So you saved about $130.00 Good Job. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

This sounds EXACTLY like the problem I am having with my Whirlpool Dryer. Neither my husband or I are very handy-man savy, what would you suggest? Hubby says let's go get a new one, and I am thinking let's not and fix it!!! Where do I find parts and how do I know for sure if it is the motor, pulley, belt and blower wheel??? I opened it up and it looks like the belt is still in tact, but I am afraid to go any further!! It's only 4-5 years old and I'd like to think would be worth fixing. Thanks for any help!!
Frustrated in PA!
