Unhappy Whirlpool Gas Dryer Igniter failure
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LG7681XMWO
Age: More than 10 years

Model LG7681XMWO Whirlpool Gas Dryer. Coils checked OK but replaced them anyway. Bi-metal switch eliminated via jumper. Using external AC input to burner to eliminate all internal components other than the burner itself. Results: Prior to above action the burner lit up on the first try after new coils installed, but not there after. It also lit up first time before the coil were replace, this was after it had set un-used for many days. The igniter glows bright until the bi-metal sensor opens to select the 2nd coil. Likewise with manual operation of the "Jumpered" bi-metal bypass. With difficulty I have been able to get the flame started with a hand triggered igniter, type used to lite a gas stove. However the flame seems to be diminished from normal. Igniter ohmed at 107 ohms (read somewhere it should be between 50 and 400 ohms). Can the igniter be the problem since it is in series with the 2nd coil? I was told they usually work or they don't lite. It almost appears as though the 2nd coil is not completely picked (via diminished flame). Could there be a problem with the valves? With the burner removed, ac applied directly to the burner (thus eliminating internal sensors), the jumper opened simulating the bi-metal sensor opening to select the 2nd coil, and then manually blowing air into the gas feed opening results in hearing air flowing from the burner. Seems like when I have the burner installed it should pass gas and lite. Have the valves deteriorated to a point that they do not allow enough gas to flow. This old guy would appreciate some help. Thanks

You might need a new gas valve

Ed, Send me your telephone number and I will call you and run you thru the logical check I did on my dryer. I would post here but it would take too much time, particularly if you have questions. I am leaving for a trip Saturday and will not be available for almost 3 weeks. d_eastman@hotmail.com
