Default Whirlpool electric dryer: not hot enough
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: SEDS800JQ
Age: 5 - 10 years

The high heat temperature setting heats, but is not as hot as the medium perm press setting. Consequently, we now use the medium setting for all our heavy loads, but it takes longer than it should to dry the clothes. Everything else seems to work fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would bet that the vent from the back of the dryer, to the outside is clogged. If you want to clean it good. Lowes now carry's a vent cleaning kit that attaches to any drill. I would make sure the vent is cleaned first. Then check it. If the vent is clean, and you still have the problem, I would replace the cycling thermostat, located on the back. If you need further instruction, I could be reached at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

I carefully cleaned the vent. I also checked the operating thermostat for continuity. It seems fine. It seems odd that the thermostat would work fine for all the settings except high. Doesn't it just stay on until it gets to a certain temperature, and then after a certain period of time, some switch tells it to shut off?

If the vent is clear for sure, I would replace the internal bias thermostat. Take the back off the dryer, and you will see a thermostat that has 4 wires coming to it. That is the one. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Thanks for taking the time. I've ordered the thermostat.
