Question Whirlpool dryer tumbles but doesn't heat
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LER5848EQ2
Age: 5 - 10 years

I'm sure that there are quite a few threads on this type of problem, but I already checked the heating element and it gives me continuity; also, it is not shorted to ground. The two red wires leading to it each give me app. 115 volts each, yet it doesn't heat. Another observation: a thermostat or cut-off (part # 3399848) gives me no continuity; would that be normal? Thanks in advance for your help.

Could not find the part number you used
Here is a link to your dryer
Whirlpool LER5848EQ2

You have found the problem
All thermostat/cutout contacts should be closed at room temperature

Make sure to give the machine and vent a good cleaning
Also check outside vent flaps operate correctly

Thanks for your reply. the part number is for the thermal cut-off is PS334299. That's the one that gives me no continuity. About the heating element, I wasn't sure because the books tell me I should have 5 to 50 ohms and I have zero (continuity). Would appreciate a comment, Thanks.

Your thermostat needs replacing

When you say zero I assume you mean 0 ohms
This would be a dead short and would blow your breaker
To measure the resistance of the element
Make sure drier is unplugged
Remove one wire going to the element
Set your meter to the 1X ohms scale
Short the meter probes together and check that you get 0 ohms. Set meter to 0 if using an analogue meter.
Measure across the element and you should see some resistance

If you tried measuring using the 1K (kilohm) scale it would give a zero just because the meter cannot resolve low ohms on this scale

Would this also be the answer for the same problem only on a Roper (Whirlpool subsidiary I guess) RGX3514PQ0?

Took the back off. Turned the dryer on...flame stayed on for about 5 seconds, then cut out. Took another minute or two before it clicked on again, this time for a second or two less.
