Question Whirlpool Dryer stops
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: Ler7646EQ2
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Whirlpool Dryer which has started cutting off after just a few minutes of drying. I tried it in the timed drying and also in the automatic dry-miser and both seem to stop after a few minutes. When it stops, one cannot restart it right away and the timer indicater is not at the off position. When the motor stops working, the timer apears to still work as it moves till it get to the off position. Sometimes I am able to restart it before it get to the off position depending on how long it had stopped other times it will get to the off position and then I have to set the timer again to start it.
I have detected that during period when it had stopped, it makes some attempts to start the motor ( it makes some noise as if starting again) but it is not able to.

I took it apart yesterday and cleaned it removing all the lint and put it together again but that didn't help.

I just did some test on the dryer when it stopped. I connected wire to the hi limit thermostat , the operation thermostat and the fuse one after the other but in all cases the dryer couldn't be started. I also tested the resister across the motor and it reads 3.0 ohms.

It sounds like the bearing in the motor is seizing up and causing the motor to over heat.

Check the motor to see if is turning freely and then when it stops check it again.

Here is a link to your dryer model Ler7646EQ2.

Yes it turns freely in both case. Will it be that I have to change the whole motor?

If it is not seizing there must be an internal problem in the motor and it will have to be replaced.
