If you have your dryer set on automatic, and it does not make heat, it will run forever waiting for heat, but on timed dry, timer will advance to off. My hunch is,
blocked vent overheated dryer, till thermal cut off fuze burned out,stopping heater. Or heater burned out. Either way you need to repair heating system
