Default Ticking sound from motor
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: GLEQ2152ES0
Age: 1 - 4 years

Greetings,

The motor on this dryer makes a ticking sound. I relieved the tension pulley and turned it by hand and it ticks at the same point in rotation. Also has a slight burning smell when on. Am I looking at a bad motor already?

Thanks

I do believe you need a new motor, I have experienced that before myself. Tom

Default Thanks

Thanks for the confirmation. I did pull the entire thing apart and found the burning smell - lint had gotten trapped around behind the drum above the heating coils.

Machine is a lil over 3 years old....I don't think i'm going to put any money into it and just replace it...Different brand of course.

You never did say what the problem was.

The ticking may well be one of the centrifugal switches is not right or something else in the motor.

I looked at your post and saw the ticking and the burning smell and felt it was the motor but you now know that the motor is not overheating producing a burning smell so things have changed.
My compressor motor ticks once per revolution but it has a very poor centrifugal switch design. The compressor runs just fine.

I do not think you would hear it as a ticking sound, the motor just rotates so fast all you would hear is a whirr.

If the tick occurs once per drum rotation then it is coming from someplace else

Default Tick

The problem is - when the motor turns you can hear a "tick" - kinda like what a 12speed bicycle does. I relieved the tension belt and turned the motor by hand and the TICK happens once per revolution and in the same spot - with the drum disconnected. It never made this noise before and when the motor is running the tick get's louder and louder.

I also disconnected the blower from the motor and turn it by hand - still a tick - the sound is coming from the motor itself. There is a small black collar on the shaft above what i think is some sort of breaker. You can push down on the black collar and see 4 little arms spring out triggering the breaker. I'm assuming this has something to do if it overheats. While watching the collar as I turn the shaft it's not in "perfect" rotation - i can see it varies by about 1/16" in 1 place and that appears to be the same spot the tick happens.

Sorry for not knowing the proper terms. I'm just a printer technician.

What you are looking at is the centrifugal switch mechanism
The overheat protector is inside the motor you cannot see it

When the motor gets close to it's full operating speed the arms fly out due to the centrifugal force from spinning. This then activates two switches.

One is to disconnect the start winding which is only required to get the motor started from a dead stop. If left on, the motor would overheat.

The other turns the heater on. This ensures that the heater does not come on without air blowing over it.

If you can figure out why it is rotating out of kilter then perhaps you could fix it.
Could be a spring has fallen off.
It's worth a shot.
