Default Start switch purpose?
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110 63952 100
Age: 5 - 10 years

Dumb question, I'm sure. But, what exactly is the purpose of the start switch? Our dryer malfunctioned, but I found that it runs fine as long as I hold in the start switch. Can this be considered a legitimate test for the switch? ( For two months now we have been using it with tape holding in the start switch. Have to leave the door open when not in use, as closing the door activates it... unless we make sure the timer is in the "off" position). Thanks.

Your motor has 2 sets of motor windings, the first starts the motor, then the motor switch shifts it to the run windings. If the run windings burn out you are running it on the starter windings. Got it?

Well....I guess I understand. But, as long as it "runs" (the motor, I mean), what's the problem?
