Cool Rumbling maytag dryer
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: DG713
Age: More than 10 years

Our maytag dryer starts rumbling when I turn it on , but everything works fine, just rumbling when I turn it on and keeps it up till drying is complete. I have turned the tumbler inside by hand and it also rumbles and when I stop it rumbles for just a few seconds. I looked inside through the front small door that shows the burner and drum and the drum rolls ok and belt is ok and roller looks ok , but I cannot see the other side. I just took the door off the back of the dryer and the rumbling sounds like it is coming from the motor . Could it be bearings in the motor? Or is there something between the motor and the belt pulley? The dryer is about 19 years old. It is gas and I have replaced the igniter about a year ago. The serial number is 386175 XE Model number DG713
Thanks for your help.

Hi,

You will need to replace the blower wheel, #4 in the parts diagram.
It is plastic and has stripped out in the center so it free wheels around the motor shaft.

You can get to the blower wheel by removing the front of the dryer.

I had a rumbling noise with my 29-year old Maytag DE308 electric dryer. Like you, I thought it was the drum rollers. But it turned out to be the blower fan.
Fan is attached to the front shaft of the motor. Take off six mall screws which hold the fan casing. You will probably see a plastic squirrel cage fan. On mine, the shaft receiver was worn completely round. It should have a flat spot to receive the half-round shaft. I just bought one from PartSelect and replaced it. Easy job. The only hassle was getting the belt back on, which took a little sweat. On my old model, you work from the front, and have to be reaching around blind, feeling your way with both hands. (You would not need to remove the belt just to replace the fan. I had it off because I thought the problem was the drum rollers.)
Dryer runs smooth and quiet now, for a cost of $15 for blower fan, $5.95 shipping, a little sweat, and a lot of satisfaction.
