Default Please help! Dryer question
Brand: Kenmore
Age: 1 - 4 years

My dryer has been turning my white clothes gray. When my wife cleans the lint filter out the lint is dark gray. I took the back of the dryer off and made sure all the lint filters were clean and the exhaust hose is free of obstructions. It worked again a few days and now is turning everything gray again. It looks like it is smoke damage. Could I have a bad thermostat, or just a crappy dryer? Thanks in advance.

If you are getting spots on your clothes, it could be your washer. Does your wife use fabric softener? Did you look inside the dryer drum, to see if you have any rust on the tub, or any dark spots, that might be a dried foreign object. I could be reached at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

No, there are not any spots. It will turn everything in the load gray. A white shirt will be uniformly gray. It looks like smoke damage to the whole load.

You got me. Does it take a long time dry the clothes. If not there has to be some sort of outside problem. Sorry, I just don't want to tell you to mstart replacing parts. I have been doing this for 30 years, and everytime there are things on the clothes it is a outside source. Sorry I can't help you Tom ApplianceEducator.com

OK, you said it is from an outside source. I noticed this black dust on my computer tonight. I went and looked at the filter to my furnace and it was solid black. Evidently I have a problem somewhere. My question would be, "how is it getting into my dryer from the air inside my house, and what in the world is going on with my furnace?" Any heating and air guys on here? The weird thing is that the black dust is only getting on plastic things in my house, the air filter, and the dryer. Anyone have an idea about this?

You could have a return air problem with your furnace, or there is a inacurate air to gas mixture. I would call a heating and air technician out to your home. Tom

I think I found the problem. My wife was burning a candle that produced a lot of soot. It is on my TV, computer, and I guess got in my dryer. I think it is just candle soot everywhere. Needless to say, no more candles in my house.

Thanks for all of your help Tom, I really do appreciate the time you took to answer my questions. I will let you know if that is really it.

You know, when you said it was the candles, I finally remembered, that a friend of my wife, when I went over there house, I noticed that there wall black on the carpet going around the boarders of every room, and when I asked my wife, she said that comes from buring candles. I do think you have. Thats why I have my wife working for me, she's the smart one. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
