Talking Outlet has Power...Dryer Doesn't
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: pye4500
Age: 1 - 4 years

My wife hates it when I get a hold of that screw driver. But I love to learn this stuff..by the way transmissions are tough. Any ways.. My dryer just quit working and acted just like a blown fuse. No power, no door light or noth’en. I did the breaker check, stuck the probes in the outlet, good. Stuck the probes on the end of the power cord in the dryer, good. Checked continuity of the door switch, the fuse thingy in the vent housing, and the one right by the heat element (I like using tech terms like thingy). I even check continuity of the wire to the light bulb. But know I'm reaching the stage of just grasping at straws. I'm just dumb founded by the complete lack of power and I'm missing a piece of the puzzle. Help me Shelia!!!

Check at the terminal block were the cord is attached at the dryer.

If everything is fine there look in the control panel.

This sound like a wire has burnt off.

Smile Hidden Fuse

So what was confusing me (Which is easy to do) is a had power coming out of the block, L1 to N 120v and L2 to N 120v and L1 to L2 240v. I had checked what I thought was all the fuses and switches. But when I looked at the wiring diagram there was a thermal fuse hidden from me. There are actually two by the heat element, one that sticks out like a sore thumb right on top of the element with red wires while the other under is stuck in the center of the element with white wires attached. AH!!! All though I saw the white wires go into the heating element I didn't think that was a fuse, becuase I wasn't looking for two. If I had not looked at the wiring diagram and seen the white wire coming off the door switch making a "b" line right for that fuse and the diagram telling me it was a fuse I'd be tearing apart the timer by now ... Now seeing that fuse was the first thing that should have a complete circuit and let me have a door light I knew I was on to somehthing. I put a by pass clip on and "hello" dryer... Man I love it when I get I lucky and fix things also...Thanks for your help Sheila (sorry for the mispell last time) and have a great day!!!

The dryer should not really be used with out the fuse. It is a safety device.

Default thought as much

Well I dont have much of a choice to use it but I can keep an eye on it woudlnt use it and leave while fuse is jumped

that fuse is tripped when it gets to hot correct?

either case now that the dryer is clean about 2 lbs of lint pulled form the collector duct it is drying much faster was almost like hard ground next to the squirl cage

well parts are on order comgin from the next state so hopes they dont take to long

Default Hidden fuse

Wow this site is a life saver. I had the same issue of my dryer not starting. This happened a couple years ago and I paid a repairman $150 to replace a fuse. Knowing this I figured I would be able to replace the thermal fuse and save his cost. I bought the fuse kit at a local hardware store, came home, replaced it and it still the dryer didn't come on. My wife was pushing for the new dryer but I wasn't about to give up so easily. That's when I turned to the internet and luckily found this site. After searching through the forums I found the same issue and the real issue. The Hidden Fuse. I replaced it and bam it works!!!

I've been told and read that the fuse blows because the vent line is clogging/blocked. I clean the filter/screen before every use but when I opened up the dryer there was a ton of built up, dried up lint. How can you prevent this? I plan on taking my dryer apart more often and cleaning the inside more often.

Again this site is a life saver. You guys ROCK!!!

P.S. This is a Maytage dryer and I found the schematic taped to the back of the top panel when I removed it.

iudennis:
Can you prevent your car from getting the oil filter dirty? Same thing applies,
every thing should be cleaned out once and a while. As dryers get older, the felt seals wear, and let in a little lint, that they didn't when it was new. If you let lint build up too much on the filter, it has to go somewhare's else. With my regular customers, I offer them a matinance deal, every 2 yrs. I throughly clean dryer, check, or replace belt, Support rollers ect. You know it'll make a dryer last a long time, a little matinance, works the same for your car as we all know!!!Bettyboop
or replace belt
