It will only stay running if I hold down the start button, but even when i'm doing that it wont heat. This is a electric dryer.

It sounds like you have to problems.

First the run winding in the motor has failed so when you are holding the start button it is running on the start winding.

The motor will have to be replaced.

The heating problem could be a fuse, a wire burnt off or the heating element or even the timer contacts.

Check the voltage at the wall outlet you should have 240 volts.

Check the wiring in the dryer.

Check the element for continuity.
