Default Object Dropped into lint vent!
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: 5 - 10 years

Something was on top of the dryer (don't know what it was exactly) but I was cleaning the basement and had placed a bunch of things on top of the dryer. When I went to take out the lint filter because I had just put in a load of clothes to dry, I heard something fall into the filter thingee. I tried removing the back of the dryer and saw nothing. It's in the chamber going down somewhere. I tried running the dryer but it makes huges noises and smells like rubber burning. Help! Should I go into debt to buy a new dryer? I am a single mom with no one to help with this.

With a little luck you should be able to fix this with it just costing you time

The item dropped down and is jammed in the blower wheel
This is attached to the motor so the odor was the motor overheating
Hopefully it did not burn out

Will need a Model Number if you need help taking it apart
Here is some help in finding it

What you need to do is unplug the dryer, and then take the 2 phillips head screws that are right next to the vent , where the lint filter goes in, and then take the back off. If you are standing behind the dryer on the left hand side at the bottom, that is where whatever dropped is at. There will be 4 screws that hold the blower cover in place. Take them out and slide the cover to the right, and remove the foreign object. Tom

Default Dryer vent

I, too, dropped something into the dryer vent. I took the back off and see where it probably is, but am not sure where to proceed from here. Please help! I have a Whirlpool, model #LE5320XTNO. Thanks.

If you take the back off the dryer on the left side you will see the vent housing. Take the 4 5/16s screws out, and the 2 phillips head screws out of the top where the lint filter goes in, and then you could slide the housing out of the way in the back, and take anything out of there. Tom

Thanks for responding. A while ago I did remove the four screws off the vent housing but didn't think about the screws on top. When I was only able to move the bottom part and saw the fan was in the way, I figured I'd try again with a coat hanger. The coat hanger worked! But I will keep the information you provided in case it ever happens again. Thanks again!
