Default Motor or Motor Start Switch ???
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: DE882
Age: Please select

I've a dryer that won't start, push to start and get a humming noise.
I've taken the advice from previous post by taping the door switch closed and helped the tumble counterclock wise and away it went.

Pulled one of the two blue wire off the motor, assuming these are the motor windings, and checked by using a multi-meter across the 2 terminals, and got tone.

How can I insure, and diagnose, that my problem is not the motor start switch ?

I don't have your wiring diagram but the way the motor is wired inside you will get a good reading if either of the windings are good.

From what you have described the start winding is burnt out.

The start winding is only in the circuit for a very short time to get the motor turning and then the centrifugal switch through it out of the circuit and leave the run winding in.

When you turn the drum by hand you are acting as the start winding.

You will need to replace the motor.

Here is a link to your dryer model de882.
