Default Maytag Dryer stopped working - burning smell
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: PYE4500AYW
Age: 5 - 10 years

My wife was using the dryer the other day and it stopped working. No light inside either. We smelled a burning smell when it quit. After reviewing the posts in the forum I'm hoping it's the thermal fuse / high limit switch. Does this sound right?

Thanks!

No it does not sound right. If it were you would still have a light. What you need to do is unplug the dryer, and take the small panel off the dryer, where the plug goes into the dryer, and see if there is not a burn't wire, on the terminal block. If not pop the top up, and see if there are any burn't wires. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at www.applianceeducator.com Tom

I was told by the dealer that it's most likely the motor. Is there any way to check that before buying one?

Just the shear fact that it is doing what it is doing, as a tech, it is obvious. If you check the motor switch with a meter it will check fine. Replace the motor. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Default Just replaed the thermal fuse

and high limit switch. Working OK now and no burning smell (except when I first turned it back on for just a minute). I'll get a motor too and replace it. Not too expensive now that I know how to do it myself. Thanks for the info! Great site.
