Default Maytag Auto Dry won't shut off
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: PYE2300AYW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Maytag Performa dryer that will no longer shut itself off in the Auto Dry cycles. The Timed Dry cycles work fine. This Maytag does not have a moisture sensor, so I am not sure what causes the Auto dry to shut off, or what needs to be replaced. Any help would be appreciated...

Here are your parts includes a schematic
Maytag PYE2300AYW Parts List

Take a look in the control console at the resistor. During Auto, the timer gets it's power from the heater coil at 220 volts, the resistor reduces it to 120 volts for the timer motor. Has probably gone open.

Check it or have it checked for resistance.
Should be 3.77 kilohms, within 20 % of this is fine

The way it works is when the thermostat turns off the timer gets 220 volts, all the resistor does is reduce this to 120 volts.

Put the unit to Air Dry this elininates the thermostat as a possible cause as it is out of circuit.

If resistor OK then you may need a new timer.
Contacts TM to A may not be closing

Here is your circuit path
L2, MOTOR CENT SWITCH, HEATING ELEMENT, RED wire to R on the timer, RESISTOR, contacts TM to A, TIMER MOTOR, contacts L to M . L1

Please keep everthing in the public forum, that way it may help others and also you may receive help from others.

Yes the resistor it is an easy fix, just open up the control console and you will see it. You may be able to see if it has overheated.

Default Resistor

Does anyone have a picture of how the resistor hooks up. I really dont get the electric mapping sheet they provide. I pulled the old one off and went to install the new one but not sure which prong to slide it back on. I know it hooks on the bottom prong (like a cooper rod) and then there was an empty slot 2 prongs above, just above a red wire but then I noticed there was also a prong free further up towards the top on the same side--near a white wire. Help? The prong that is just 2 up(from the bottom prong that is hooked to the resistor-both are silver) looks to be the one because it shows some wear and the other empty prong towards the top looked pretty shiny(brass). Sorry if it seems confusing, not really an electrican or repairman.... thanks

Default resistor

Just to clarify, I put it on the silver prong that is marked "R" (prong just under the R in the photo). Its on the left, you can see it on this photo of the timer. The other empty prong is the brass one 3rd one down from the top (left side) --section marked N. Is this correct?

The other thing Im think is it really might be the timer because the bottom prong that is on the bottom left corner the copper knob or plug holding the silver prong is loose and is out about 1/4 of an inch. You can push it back in but it doesnt stay. So the copper is sticking out holding the silver prong that the resistor then attatches too.....thoughts that this is probably the true issue and the resister was probably good? Or should that copper do that?

Resistor goes between R (resistor) and A (auto) terminals

Denman, thanks....thoughts on the copper prong that has come loose that holds the silver thing....Seems like Ill have to replace the timer, Im thinking that its effecting the connection and not sending the electric current to the resistor which makes the auto dry feature not turn the dial....???
