Default Loud Dryer Screech...an unnerving repetitive metallic sound
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 417.99686200
Age: 5 - 10 years

Dryer makes loud screaching noise when loaded with clothes. No noise when you run it empty. Sounds like a very loud bird. Loudness decreases as clothes get dryer.

Unit is >5 years old. Inherited it from previous owners so could be as old as 10 years I would say.

I took drum out. idler pull has a crack from its center outward. But would that explain the why sounds is only heard when drum loaded? I removed drum and bearing assembly but unsure what to look for. Any help much appreciated!

Mike

Replace the drive kit. Comes all in one bag. 2 Rollers, 1 Idler Pully, and 1 Belt. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Looks like your unit uses a center mount bearing for drum support.
These a notorious for squeaks. Check it for wear, replace if necessary and re-grease it using high temp grease before reassembly.

Replace your idler, it very likely is the culprit. The addition of clothes puts extra strain on it so it may only make noise with clothes.

Check your front glides for wear replace if necessary, also the belt re: cracks.
Basically check all moving parts and all parts that have something moving against it.

Give the inside a good cleaning, also clean and check your vent system while you are at it.

Denman is "The Man." Thanks for the guidance. Taking things one at a time for now since I only need another year out of this unit.

I purchased and installed a center mount bearing kit. That was it. The larger ball had a groove worn into it by the smaller ball. Kept everything else as is and walla...screeching noise is no more. Thanks.

BTW....no rollers on this unit as mentioned in the other post. Just the front glides mentioned by Denman.
