Default Kenmore electric dryer always hot and timer ticks constantly
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 70 series
Age: Please select

This dryer was given to me by a family member and they didn't have a problem with it when they removed it from their home. It heats up and runs well but even after the drying cycle over and the knob is turned to "off" the dryer stays hot. You can hear the heating element running and the timer ticks. I haven't noticed that it moves but you can hear the ticking.

We have to shut the breaker off because this thing stays really, really hot all the time.

Even with the heat setting on low it gets too hot. Is it the heating element or the timer or both? I don't have a clue. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Unplug it or shut off the breaker and open it up
I would start with the control module
Also if you do not have the wiring diagram you may find it here
If it worked until it was moved there is a chance a wire has come loose
If all is OK
Open up the main unit

You did not say if the motor is running
There is usually a switch on the motor that prevents the heating until the motor is running.

The element heats up even when the motor isn't running. Leaving the door open doesn't prevent it from getting hot either. That is why we have to shut it off at the breaker. My grandfather took the panel off and cleaned out all of the lint and stuff so I don't know if something happened when he did that.

I will try what you suggested. Thanks!

Now it sounds like the problem will be in the heater section

Check for loose wires
There is a good chance the heater element is broken or warped to where it is touching the chassis

If you cannot find it ask your grandfather if he removed any wires
Unless you mark them it is very easy to reconnect them in the wrong place

Thank you! Would the heater problem affect the timer or is that a separate issue?

Unlikely but is possible
I do not have a wiring diagram to check for alternate current paths
You may have two problems
You could unplug the timer to check this

Remember always cut power to the unit
