Is the dryer totally dead now OR after it cools down for a while will it run again?

How did you determine that the door switch was the problem in the first place?
Did you use a meter on it?

Thought it was that since that is usually the case. I did not use a meter on it but bypassed the wires to test it. (long story)
And yes you are correct, after it cools down, it will run again.
What do you think it is??
I have Sears coming on Monday but would like to save the $$ of the visit if I can figure it out before then.

What is happening is some component is overheating this is tripping a thermal cutout when the device cools down, it resets and the dryer works again

If it runs again in 5 to 10 minutes it is usually an overtemp thermostat

If it runs again after 25 minutes or more it is usually the motor protect thermal cut out.

Though did have one recently that was taking a long time to reset and turned out to be a bad connection (very, very unusual)

Turn the dryer drum by hand, it should turn relatively easy. If it is very hard to turn then this could be causing the motor to overheat. Run the dryer on a no heat cycle for the same amount of time, if the unit shuts off then it is probably the motor overheating.

When you replaced the switch did you check and clean inside the dryer?
Have you checked and cleaned your vent system?

OK Denman.
Checked all vents-clean. I also cleaned them just to make sure.
Ran the dryer, and timed it: ran for 23 minutes.
Then it makes a "whirring" almost a grind noise and switches off.
Thoughts??

Okay it is taking longer to reset.
There is power to the machine but the machine is acting dead like there is no power.
Thoughts?

It sounds like your motor is shot and is overheating

With the heat off and it blowing a thermal cutout, it must be the motor that is tripping. You checked the drum rotation, it was OK? It could be the blower rubbing on the housing, this is doubtful but you may want to give it a check. You should have been able to feel it or hear it when you rotated the drum manually.

You probably have a bad motor bearing.

Thanks, what do you think the cost is to replace the motor?
Is it an easy job or better suited for a qualified tech?

Here is a link to parts with prices

To replace the motor you have to open up the dryer so I would also check the tub rollers, idler roller, belt and drum seals. Before even ordering parts.
The last dryer I replaced was because the motor went the replacement motor/parts were going to cost half of what a new dryer on sale would cost. Just was not worth fixing it.
Sorry I cannot make a judgement on "Is It A Do It Yourself", because I do not know your mechanical ability.
Get an over the phone estimate from local repair people which includes parts, labor and travel costs.
