Default Kenmore dryer overheats and shuts off
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 110-86870100
Age: 5 - 10 years

My dryer is overheating and shutting off on the medium and high heat settings. I can put it on the lower heat cycle (permanent press) and it runs fine without over heating.

First thing was to make sure there was no restriction to the vent (vents out the lower back and outside). Then I cleaned the entire back of the dryer free of lint or debris

I have checked the thermostats and coupler with ohm meter and all read 0 (or under 3), but I am not sure I am checking ALL the right stats/couplers. Is there a diagram or something illustrating the approximate location of all the necessary components that I can use to verify I am testing the right parts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It sound like you have a faulty cycling thermostat.

This thermostat is located on the blower housing.

It sounds like the contacts in the thermostat have welded together so they will not open when they should.

Here is a link to the parts for your dryer model 110-86870100.

Here is the thermostat.
