Cool Idler pulley direction
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: de512
Age: More than 10 years

My idler pulley screams like a banshee. My problem is I pulled the old one off and greased it, lasted about a week, but I did not notice the pulley had a rounded side to it. When you look at the pulley's circumference one side is flat the other has a hump around it. Does the flat side go up against the Idler Pulley Arm and Shaft Assembly or away from it? You would think that after 40 years of changing the brakes on my cars I would look at how things come apart.
thanks for any help

Not sure but i would guess the raised edge would go in. Try it both ways. But the idler pulley arm and spring and all will go on in more than one position. In the wrong position it do rub. See if this diagram will help. click on diagram to enlarge. part # 19

Thanks. It's not rubbing now that I can hear but I'm sure it won't sound like a car fan belt. I will look to see if there is any wear on the edge of the belt, if not I put it back on the right way by luck, or God's grace, and do it again when I replace this idler arm. I am going to assume that the hump should ride under the belt which should be in line with the power pulley on the motor shaft.. What is the worst that could happen, need a new belt?? thanks for the help

Woodchuck, you were right! The rounded edge goes toward the pulley arm or if you like the flat edge faces the back of the machine.
