I am trying to figure out how to open the front panel of my Maytag dryer for serviceing.

Here's a diagram of yours. It appears that you pry the top up with a putty knife etc. to get the spring clips out and the front should then come off. Maytag LDG8604AAE Parts List

Insert a credit card between the top and the front cover about 3 inches from the corner to release a spring clip and lift up. There is a clip on both front corners. The top will pivot up. There are two screws inside (one at each corner) to release the front cover.
