Exclamation Hotpoint Dryer motor hums, drum won't turn
Brand: Hotpoint
Model Number: DLB2650BDL
Age: More than 10 years

Intermittently, when I turn the timer on, before I turn the start switch on, the motor hums, heat goes on, drum won't turn.Other times it works properly. I replaced the belt and starter switch. I am thinking it is the timer switch, motor, or the electrical wiring block/switch/starter??? attached to the motor???

If the motor is humming that would indicate that it is getting power.

Remove the belt and turn the motor by hand.

The motor should turn freely without binding.

If the motor is not binding it mayy have a dead spot in the start winding which would mean that the motor will have to be replaced.

Here is a link to your dryer model DLB2650BDL.

Sheila,

It might be the heater that is humming. Does that change things for the motor? Could it be the motor switch?

Probably the centrifugal switch mechanism on the motor is sticking holding the switches closed. Clean it and check, give it a drop of oil, just a drop.

I would also check the heater coils
One of them might be sagging and intermittently touching the case

Based this, on the fact that the heat goes on without the motor running.
A centrifugal switch on the motor must be closed to get heat OR you have to have a grounded heater.
