Default Heats but only in delicate mode
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: LDQ9304AAM
Age: 5 - 10 years

My dryer will heat normally only in the delicate mode. Burner comes on for about 10-15 seconds, is off for about a minute then repeats. But in normal mode it will initially burn for about 10 seconds, shut off, but not come back on until the dryer has been shut down for at least 5 min. I assume that after the dryer has cooled down it will again light the gas burner in normal mode. I have cleaned the lint, checked the dryer vent hose and vent. The dryer appears to operate normally, i.e., it runs fine, timer works, it shuts down on delicate mode as it is supposed to, but it takes an awfully long time to dry a load of clothes on delicate!! I replaced both of the
heat gas coils about three years ago. Any advice greatly appreciated. My wife wants to buy a new dryer!!

I could not find that model # on the parts lists. If the vent is clear, I would replace the operating thermostat, and the high limit thermostat. But be very sure the vent is blowing hard on the outside of the house. If you need me you can reach me at my website at ApplianceEducator.com. Tom

Tom, thanks for the reply. I disconnected the venting hose and checked airflow at the opening at the back of the dryer and it seemed very strong. I just timed the actual burn time and it is only about 3 seconds before it shuts off. It can then take up to two minutes before the next burn.

It sounds to me like the coils are not staying energized on the gas valve. I would replace them. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
