A couple weeks ago the dryer wouldn't start tumbling when the button was pushed, but would make a buzzing sound. I taped the door switch as if the door was closed. I then pushed the start button and manually started the rotation of the drum. The dryer would then operate normally through the cycle. What is the problem?

Sounds like a bad start winding on the motor.
Replace the motor and you should be good to go.
