Post GE Dryer Squeak
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: DWSR-483E-AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

The dryer heats up and dries clothes just fine. It SQEAKS like nuts. So loud we can hear it two floors away!

It appears, if you slide the drum "back" in the unit, it will work for 5 minutes or so without a squeak. Pretty soon, however, it is back with the loud squeak.

Any thoughts? Link to schematic/repair manual?

Thanks!

Look for a small bearing cover at the back at the center of the drum. You may be able to get some oil or grease to it but don't overdo it and get in into the inside of the drum.

It may also have drum roller wheels at the bottom of the drum that will get noisy when they wear out. Try and listen to see exactly where the noise is coming from.

Oil did not do te trick. I also note some graphite powder just behind and above the door.

I am wondering if it could be drum slide bearings in the front that the drum rides on . . . when I "push back" the drum before a cycle starts, it runs quiet for a couple of minutes.

It does seem to be a metal to metal sound when spinning.

Any help? Link to schematics so I can try and get this apart? It appears this would be an inexpensive fit, but I will need to get the machine apart to change parts.

Thanks

I have pretty much the same problem, and in addition, many times an item being dried gets stuck between the drum and the front panel at the top, and this seems to have put pressure on the bearing. When I take out the stuck item, it runs quiet for a while, then starts squeaking again.

The drum also slides forward and back about 1/4 inch, should it be held tighter than that? My initial thought is that either a seal in the front has fallen out of place, or the bearing in the rear of the drum is failing - or perhaps both.

What do you think

Thanks
