Default Element Stays On
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: More than 10 years

Hi Folks,
I have an old (probably 80's) dryer which has served us well. If I open the door while it's running the drum stops as normal but the electric element stays on (scarey). I can even still hear the current through it. It turns off ok during the last few minutes (cool-down) and goes off if I turn the timer back to zero.
Any ideas?
Brian

When you open the dryer in the middle of the cycle it is quit normal to see the red glow.

It takes a little while for the element to cool down and not glow red.

I think what you are hearing is the element cooling down.

Mine does this also, but this isn't the solution in my case. I know this because if I set it to the middle of a heating cycle and never push start, the heating element comes on and gets hot.
In addition when it gets to the end of the cycle the buzzer sounds and never stops, though at the end of the cycle the heating element does shut off.
Please advise

Sure sounds like the same problem. Scarey as hell. I'm going to try and tear the thing apart this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

I figured mine out.
maybe it will help you.
In my case, the heating element had a piece of metal stuck in it. this was grounding it. when the machine was in a cycle, the coil was powered and not shutting off because the piece of metal (that didn't belong there) was touching the metal back of the dryer and completing the circuit. I removed the piece that was stuck in there and all was well.
You have to take the drum out (on mine at least) to get a good look at the heating element, but maybe this will help you.
