Default Electric Dryer tripping the breaker
Brand: Kenmore
Age: 1 - 4 years

When I dry a load of laundry, the dryer will trip the breaker. But only the heat portion will trip it. The dryer keep going but no heat. I thought it might need a new heating element. What do you think?

Default

I think that you may have heater problem
Heater could be grounding itself to the neutral (frame)

I know you have a breaker problem
The breaker should drop out both sides of the 220 volt line when it pops

Default Heat Coil Thermal

It has been awhile since I was inside mine, but I seem to remember a thermal element on the heat coil. This is a thermal protector that trips out the heating coil until it cools to a temp below the trip setting. If it was a short, you should be tripping the breaker in your house distribution panel. Your problem is serious! I suspect that you should remove the bottom cover (if your's has one) and make sure that it's not full of lint. Yep, they ain't sealed that well. Excessive lint around that area is a real good place for a house fire to start. If that is clear, locate the thermal protector and replace it. Turn off the power or unplug first!
