May be the start winding or switch in the motor is shot but does sound like it could be the drum is binding, overloading the motor. Do not run it too long like this as you will overheat the motor and could cause damage
Manually turn the drum, should turn fairly easily. It is hard to describe the normal force required, try this on a couple other dryers to get a feel for it.
If it is binding, here are some possible causes
1. Rear support bearing. There is an access panel to it on the back. When you remove the grounding strap be careful some units have a ball bearing in here which of course will take off and hide (the breakdown does not show one). Add a little oil to the bearing to see if that helps. If it does then this is probably the culprit. You will have to open the unit up and check it for slop/wear. Only use high temp grease in this area.. Also be careful as you are right next to the heating element and do not want to damage it. - highest probability
2. Blower wheel binding on the case - unlikely, you would usually hear this
3. Idler wheel
4 Front support glides
5, Felt drum seals - unlikely
One way or another you will be opening it up. Give everything a good check, replace any worn parts. Give the inside a good cleaning and clean/check the vent system.
If it ends up that the motor is shot, may make better sense to replace the unit. |
