Default Dryer won't stop, gets really hot
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: LEV5634AW0
Age: 5 - 10 years

When I use the TIMED drying mode of my Whirlpool dryer it won't stop at the end of the cycle, but continues on to the next mode (Fluff Air.) I've seen it turn off at the end of the Fluff Air cycle, though I'm not sure it always does. It also get really hot, much hotter than what it normally does.

I've tested what I believe is my "stop resistor"(see http://forums.partselect.com/dryer-r...mer-3079.html) and it appears to register ~4.5 Ohms, so I'm assuming it's OK. On my dryer it's a small black plastic component with two wires attached, right next to the start button. I've replaced the timer within the last 3 years (less likely to be an issue?)

For clarity: the timer knob does continue to turn, it simply doesn't stop at the end of the timed drying cycle and just keeps going. Not sure what happens if I run Auto mode.

Related to http://forums.partselect.com/dryer-r...top-2680.html? Unfortunately there's not any resolution on that topic.

TIA

You might have a shorted heating element, pull and check. Also seems like your timer contacts are welded shut, just pull timer apart to check.

Thanks for the reply. After making my initial post I went back and ran a few more tests. What I've found, I think, is that my bigger problem is with the heating element (i.e. house fire).

If I run the dryer in either AUTO or TIMED drying mode, the heating element continues to heat even after I open the door. It seems that the heating element is cycling, as it will stay for a while, then turn off for a couple of minutes, then turn back on. In some cases when I open the door the heating element goes off but the timer continues to running. After some period of time the Timer goes off and the heating element turns back on.

Also, the heating element continues to run in the Cool Down period of the Timed drying mode.

It doesn't (to me) appear to be related to the door switch, since the drum stops rotating when I open the door.

My next step is to pull the Timer and check for bad contacts (per Appguy's suggestion), but as for the heating element it's my guess that it can't be shorting (otherwise it'd run all the time?).

Any insights, for either the heating element or the Timer not stopping, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having basically the same problem with mine. I have replaced my timer, all the thermostats and the hi-limit. I'm trying to find a next step. As I see it now, it either has to be the resistor (there stops being AC to the timer motor contacts on any cycle except timed drying) but there isn't any AC to it. So, either the prblem has to be that the heater element is shorted and defeating the operating thermostat's abilbity ot close or something else strange like that. I'm attaching a link to the picture of my dryer's wiring diagram (it's actually a Kenmore which is the same as a Whirlpool) to see if anyone else has an idea. I've been working on this for months and my wife is about to kill me!!

Best to pull element and check for shorts, I will not be a part of an unsafe dryer.
