Default Dryer wont stay heated
Brand: Estate
Model Number: tgds780jq1

Hi,
I did a search for my model but no results…
I have an estate(whirlpool) dryer model #tgds780jq1 that I think is about 10+ years old. It wont stay hot.
I’ve learned via internet research that the most likely culprit is the thermal fuse. However before I buy the part I wanted to run my scenario by someone. Note, I am a complete amature and have no electrical tools for testing or electrical savy.
Anyways, my whole dryer is apart and the gas line is disconnected. When I turn the dryer on the dryer igniter heats up for about 5-10 seconds then stops.
I have learned you can test the thermal fuse by bypassing it, I just unplugged it, is this correct? When I disconnect the thermal fuse the dryer igniter does not heat up at all.
Interestingly, when I disconnect the flame sensor the dryer igniter seems to stay on(stopped after about 30 seconds as i didn’t want to damage anything). Is this because the gas is not connected? Is the flame sensor the problem?
Is it the dryer igniter?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanx.

"I have learned you can test the thermal fuse by bypassing it, I just unplugged it, is this correct?"
no. you bypass the thermal fuse by disconnecting the two wires that lead to it and connecting them to each other.

"Interestingly, when I disconnect the flame sensor the dryer igniter seems to stay on(stopped after about 30 seconds as i didn’t want to damage anything). Is this because the gas is not connected? Is the flame sensor the problem?"
no and no.

"Is it the dryer igniter?"
no.

from earlier in my original post...
"When I turn the dryer on the dryer igniter heats up for about 5-10 seconds then stops."
if the igniter is heating at all then it isnt the thermal fuse. if the thermal fuse is blown then the igniter will not heat. if the igniter is heating then shutting off the most likely problem is the coils.
<ding-ding-ding>
give that man a cigar. after replacing the coils the dryer is now working properly again.
