Default Dryer won't start
Brand: General Electric
Age: 1 - 4 years

After I close the door and turn the start knob on my electric dryer, i hear a humming sound only while the knob is turned. The dryer won't start and the noise goes away the minute i let go of the knob.

It is only 18 months old

what could be wrong.

It sounds like the motor is either seized or the start winding is faulty.

You will need a new motor.

Do you have any idea what a new motor with labor will cost?

Does the drum turn freely? Would be helpfull to check start current with an amp probe. Motor might be jammed by the blower housing.
There is an access panel in the back. Take it off and remove the belt from the motor.See if the motor will turn. If the motor bearings are seizing then you need a new motor.

Can you supply your model number?

With this I can give you a price on a motor.

As far as labor goes that will depend on the servicer.

The price of the motor may be different with the servicer too.

not missing a sock or something are you???? look down where the lint screen goes to see if anything got down there or look in the drum to see if anything got stuck around the seals. see if you can turn the drum by hand
