Default Dryer too hot - burned odor
Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: keys777e
Age: More than 10 years

Dryer appears to overheat when drying. When door is open there is a slight "burned" smell. Airflow appears to be satisfactory. Wiring connectors to item identified on parts illustration as "thermal cut-off" appear to be discolored. No other visible problem with any wiring.

The cycling thermostat may be faulty.

This would make the dryer operate on the high limit thermostat.

The cycling thermostat is located on the blower housing.

Here is a link to your dryer model keys777e.

I would also check for a shorted heater to the housing. Also it is best to make sure there is no partial restiction in the vent.

I ordered and replaced the cycling thermostat. I checked the operation without the vent attached. There is still and immediate scortched/burning smell. The wiring connectors for the CUTOFF-TML (#8 on diagram) appear to be scortched. If there is a problem with the heating element, would it be obvious from an inspection?

You definetly have a clogged vent. Most people don't really know how hard the vent should blow. To key factors that the vent is clogged is it takes too long to dry, and if it is really clogged, you will have moisture on the inside of your dryer door. If you really want to see if your vent is clooged, pull the vent hose of the wall, and put a lady's stocking on the end to catch the lint. If it works fine you know the vent is clogged. Call your local air duct cleaner, and they will clear your vent for you. Tom T. PAONE's APPLIANCE SALES & SERVICE GUIDE
