Question Dryer stops spinning with heavy load
Brand: Amana
Model Number: LEA30AW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have an Amana front load dryer that spins fine with a VERY light load and won't spin with even a load of 10 pounds. I have replaced the rollers which weren't spinning very well at all. This allowed me to add a few articles of clothing to the dryer before it would stop again. The belt is intact and is not slipping on the drum. It is positioned fine on the tensioner. The motor runs well and was actually replaced two years ago. When I turn the drum by hand, it seems to be difficult to turn, almost like it's binding or catching on something. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help.

Eric

First thing I would check is the felt seals at the front and back of the drum
Run your hand around on the inside to see if something has wedged itself in there
Sometimes you can use a push piece of thin cardboard (cereal box top) in and run it around. Note you will have one spot where it will stop (this is the seam), it should not catch going the opposite direction.

If all seems OK you will have to open it up

Check that the motor turns easily and the blower wheel is not rubbing on anything
Check all rollers/idler and their shafts for wear and binding
Check your felt seals
Check the front plastic glides for wear

The best thing to do is since you know how to take apart your dryer, pull the front off, and take the drum housing off, and then pull the drum out, and inspect the idler pully. I noticed you did not mention replacing it. Also while you are in there turn the motor with your hand, and see if it turns freely, and check the rollers again. I am sure with this help you will find your issue. If you need me I can be reached at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom
