Default Dryer stays on in "more dry mode"
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: mdg9316aww
Age: 5 - 10 years

This is the Dependable Maytag. Dryer stays on for hours in More dry mode. Clothes do dry. Timer works ok in other modes as it shuts off and buzzes correctly. If there is a moisture sensor I cannot find it. Otherwise if there is no sensor then could the prob be in the timer itself? Thanks, Dave

If you stick you head in the dryer, and look down to the right an on the inside of the front panel, there it is. It is a thin metal bar. First thing I would do is clean it off real well. Use some alcohol, or nail polish remover. Some times they get a build-up on them, from dryer sheets, and they can't sense well. The second thing is, if you take off the front of the dryer. Of course unplug the power cord. You will see 2 wires going to the sensor bar, sometimes they fall off, due to vibration. If you do all that, and it still does the same, replace the sensor. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Since the problem is now intermittent and only heats initially for the first burn cycle ie. after the gas shuts off when it gets hot the gas doesnt come on again. Could the problem be in the gas valve coils? How do I test them?

Just replace the coils, and you will have it. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
