Unhappy Dryer starts without start switch
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: PBSR485D1WW
Age: 1 - 4 years

My problem is that the dryer will start simply by turning the dial (timer or auto-sensing cycles). The start switch doesn't need to be turned to start the drying. The timer seems to be working fine and there is heat. I discovered this problem half way through a cylce when I checked the clothes. When I shut the door, the dryer came back on. I found a somewhat similar post from some time ago, but it doesn't sound quite the same to me.

Of course, I'd like the machine to work perfectly, but I can live with this problem if there is no danger. Is there a fire hazard? Is more electricity used? Will this cause the machine to need replacing sooner?

I'm a bit tight for money right now so I'd like to avoid calling for an expensive repair visit, if possible. I am only moderately handy, so I'm not sure how much repair I can do if things are complicated. Thanks for any help!

It sound like the contact in the start switch have welded together.

It is not a fire hazard and it will not make the dryer use an more power.

Can you please verify your model number?

Sorry, the model number is: PBSR485ED1WW. My mistake.

Thanks for the information. Will running the dryer in its current state ruin it or shorten its life?
