Default Dryer Starting Problem
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MDE9706AYW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Help. I have a Maytag electric dryer that starts sometimes, but other times makes a loud buzzing sound. It seems like if you start it several times the motor will overheat and then you need to let it sit for a while to reset. I thought it might have been the motor, but when I opened up the dryer it measured OK. I also checked the thermostat and thermal switches as well as the door switch - all measure OK. The only thing that seems incorrect is that one of the rollers in the back of the dryer seems to not roll as freely as the other roller and the idler wheel. Could this be causing the motor to have to work to hard? I purchased a motor from you but have not opened the box, I could return it and get new rollers, idler arm and belt. But I am not sure if this would fix the problem.

I would say that it very well could be the roller if it does not move freely it may cause stress on the motor as well as the ideler arm if its bent or other damage could cause a problem also..so sholz64 thats what I would do exchange the motor for the parts switch them out see if it helps

If your dryer motor makes a deep noise at startup, you have a burnt start winding.
Look at the windings of the motor, you should see the burnt winding.

The symptoms changed recently to that deep noise at startup. I am glad I did not return the new motor. I just replaced it and that did the trick. Thanks for the advice.
