Default Dryer runs 3 minutes shuts off
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 66722690
Age: 5 - 10 years

Above model # runs about 3 minutes then shuts itself off. Cools down for a couple minutes then you can restart it. After shutting off inside of dryer seems really hot more than usual. Any suggestions ?

I would suggest checking the high limit thermostat. It's possible that it is open; thereby causing the dryer to ovrheat thus shutting it down. This is accomplished by checking the continuity with a meter at the High limit thermostat located in the back of machine.

If this isn't it check all of the connections for continuity including the thermostat inside, which requires removing the front cover.

Also. check your model number because my searches came up but somewhat incomplete.

Here is a parts list. Actual unit model number has a 110 at the start.
Kenmore Parts for Models 11066722690

I assume by shut down you mean the drum stops rotating.

Could be a vent problem, more likely a motor problem (internal thermal protect tripping)

Remove the vent from the unit and try it
If you do not want any lint in the house, take a pair of pantyhose, put one leg inside the other and attach this to the dryer exhaust. Leave enough room so it can blow out like a windsock.

If it now works OK your vent is dirty and/or the outside flap is not opening
Check the dryers output for good air flow.

Other than the thermal fuse which blows and would need replacing, the thermostats will not shut the motor off.
Try moving the drum by hand, should rotate fairly easily
Try running a no heat cycle, does it still shut down? If yes and the vent is good you have motor problems.

I do not have a wiring diagram for this unit so am guestimating.

Machine shuts down all together. No heat no movement. Drum seems to move kind of hard to me and when machine is running seems to make extra noises than before. Machine was a little dirty inside cabinet and rear. Have cleaned all this. Checked continuity on high limit have good continuity also checked the thermal fuse ? all ok I am leaning as you are denman I think the motor is going south

It is hard to describe how much force it should take to rotate the drum.
So I suggest you go to a couple friends homes and give their dryers a try, this will give you an idea of what normal is. Though your friends may think you are abnormal.

Could be yours is binding for some reason and this is overloading the motor.

Here is some good info. Look at #26 general motor problems
Inglis-Whirlpool-Kenmore dryers, common repair problems, idler pulleys, belt, drum rollers, noises, how to take apart, no heat problems, replacing the drum rollers, replacing the heating element, motor problems
