Default Dryer running hot
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: DPXQ473ET6WW
Age: 5 - 10 years

In the automatic cottons mode the dryer and cloths get very hot and the timer setting doesn't advance to off. The dryer works ok in the timed dryer mode. I replaced the timer and this didn't fix the problem. I now suspect the sensor in the Drum Outlet. I think this senses the moisture/temp of the cloths. Help.

Yes the sensor in the dryer outlet is the most likely cause of your problem.

Here is a link to your dryer model DPXQ473ET6WW.
