Default Dryer overheating and won't stop heating
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: FSE446RHS1
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have several problems going on with my dryer. First it seems to be over heating, the clothes are very hot and the top dryer is also hot. Secondly when clothes are removed before the timed drying stops and the dryer is not started, it seems the heating element keeps heating until the timer goes to 0. Reading prior posts seems to indicate I need an operating thermostat and a hi limit thermostat, do you think that will also fix my problem with the heater continuing to run?

No I do not. The operating thermostat regulates the temperature, and the high limit is a saftey. Let me ask you this. I think you might have a venting problem. Do this before you start spending money, because a clogged vent would give the same condition. Pop the top up on the dryer. Of course unplug it first. slide a putty knife on the right side under the top panel in the front right corner, and pop it up, and do the same on the left side. Then push the top back up against the wall. Then we need to take the front off. Look inside the up top on the left corner on the front on the inside, is a phillips head screw, take it out, and the other one on the other side, and take the wires off the door switch, and watch where the wires went, and remove the front, you probably have a ton of lint in there. Clean it out, and put it back together. Also take the vent hose off the back of the dryer, and clean it out, and then turn the dryer on, when you have it all back together, and then go outside, to where the vent vents out, and feel if you have a good air flow. It should be blowing real well. If not you have to clean the vent to the outside. Then if you have a problem, you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Here is your parts breakdown
Frigidaire FSE446RHS1 Parts List

And here is link that should be helpful, no matter what the cause
Frigidaire, White Westinghouse, Magic Chef, Maytag Performa Dryers, common repair info, no heat, noises, how to take apart

My guess would be that your heater coil has broken and has shorted to ground/frame. This then gives 120 volts across part of the coil through the timer contacts.
All contactcs open when you reach OFF.

Could also be a shorted motor centrifugal switch but I would expect that your thermal fuse would blow if you had the full 240 volts across the heater without any air flow.

Well I cleaned the dryer and wow there was a lot of lint behind the lint screen. I thought I had the problem fixed. But unfortunately not. Seems the dryer still runs hot. The clothes come out very hot even when the dryer is set on med heat and run for 20 minutes. So what now? Thanks for the help
