Default Dryer overheating
Brand: Amana
Model Number: ALE956EAW
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi
We are having trouble with our Amana Dryer.
It overheats sometimes but not consistently. It will sometimes shut down and display SH in the LED readout. It has ruined some of our clothing! It is a dryer that is supposed to sense when the clothes are dry and shut off accordingly but it never did work, the clothes were never truly dry. A repairman at the time said that that was just the way these "sensor" dryers are, and we should just set the timer to dry. It will overheat in regular, perm press and knits, it doesn't seem to matter which cycle I choose.
We have checked to make sure it is properly vented, took it apart and cleaned the inside of lint.
We have replaced the high limit sensor twice and both times it worked for about 2 weeks and quit, and overheated again. We also replaced the fuse the second time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The SH stands for a shorted thermistor, bad wiring or temperature near the thermistor is above 175 degrees.

Because you say it is only happening some times I would think it is a bad connection.

The thermistor that you should look at is in the blower housing.

Here is a link to your dryer model ALE956EAW.

We replaced the thermistor and guess what, still overheating. My husband did say the thermistor was covered with a layer of lint when he replaced it. It worked okay for a few days but then overheated again. It sometimes doesn't do the cool down cycle. I do a lot of laundry when my kids come home from college. Do I need to let the dryer rest between uses? Can you overuse a dryer? I am getting afraid of using the dryer! Thanks for any advice.

Dott, You might have a clogged vent from the back of the dryer to the outside vent. If you take the vent off the wall, and leave the other end on the dryer, and put a panty hose on the end of the hose that you took of the wall, so no lint comes in the house, and run a full cycle, and see how it works. If it works fine. Then clean the vent. Let me know what you find, because this test has to be done first, or you will continue spending your money on guesses. I can be reached at my website at ApplianceEducator.com Tom
