Unhappy Dryer only runs when "start" button pressed
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: Elite (110.63932101)
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hello! Last night my 5-year-old Kenmore dryer hit a mid-life crisis and decided to stop working. More specifically, it will run as long as the "push to start" button is pressed, but as soon as you let go of the button it immediately stops.

I have not verified that the heating element is working, but my wife did comment that some of the clothes were "hot" when she took them out (maybe too hot for the cycle we were running it on when it died .)

I began casting about, guessing wildly at what it could be, until I hit this forum and thought someone much brighter than me would have an answer off the top of their head!

My wife is in the middle of a whole batch of laundry and has none too diplomatically pointed out that if I had bought the model she wanted to begin with, I would have clean pants to wear today So, your help would not only be appreciated, it could go a long way toward me avoiding going down to the store and buying a $900 dryer (and a $50 pair of clean pants)!

Thanks!

Jared

The motor in your dryer is what is causing the problem.

The motor has two windings, a start winding and a run winding. The start winding gets the motor turning and then the run winding takes over. These windings cannot be replaced separately. The whole motor will have to be replaced.

Here is a link to your motor and below is photo.
