Default Dryer not working on auto cycle
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MDE5500
Age: 5 - 10 years

This Neptune dryer works ok on the timed drying cycle. When it is in the auto mode, it starts out normally but after 10 minutes or so, the time left indicator drops down to ~10 minutes (like it is in a cool down mode) and then the unit stops as if the drying cycle was completed. The clothes are still wet.

I have replaced the sensor bar. There are no fault codes displayed in the diagnostic check.

Any ideas where to look next?

Google the Maytag Service Library, and put your model # in, and see what you can find. Personally I think you need a control board. If you need me you can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Here is the link to the service manual
http://www.servicematters.com/maytag...s/16023110.pdf

The board is a definite possibility.
I would check the thermistor first
Manual says 10 kilohms at 70 F and 1754 ohms at 150 F.
Looks like they use this as a programming device
They monitor it and then readings are used to change the memory/ program parameters.

Also would try the old unplug it and see if the board will reset
Leave it unplugged for half an hour, this is a long shot.

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the manual last night.

Good point on the thermistor. I'll check it later tonight.

Ran the dryer on a timed cycle. The temp in the diagnostic mode was 63c, resistance was ~ 2.1k. Let it cool down to room temp (~60F) and the resistance was 11k. Held the end of the thermistor and the resistance started dropping, so I think the thermistor is ok.

Looks like it is pointing toward the board.
