Default Dryer motor won't shut off
Brand: Sears
Model Number: 110-8719090
Age: 5 - 10 years

I just received this dryer. used. I'm guessing at its age. The machine seems to work fine in every other respect, but the motor won't shut off when the cycle is finished. The heat shuts off, and the motor shuts off when the door is opened (and stays off when the door is closed again), but it keeps on running after it's supposed to shut itself off. Any ideas?

Does the timer continue to go through all the different cycles or does it just not shut off at the end of the cycle that you where using?

It may be the contact in the timer are weld together.

Default Dryer not shutting off

I had the exact same problem. I even have it listed on this forum. Reading some of the replys I decided to open up the console and look at the timer assembly. Upon opening I found it packed with lint that escaped the lint trap system. I got the vacuum cleaner out with it's thin wand and cleaned it all up and got as close as I could to wires, switches, etc. Voila ...it works! Some contacts must have been not making contact due to lint. I sure am glad I didn't spend the $60+ on a new timer. This may even make contacts to the heating portion of the controls. Hope this works for all of you out there. I see many have this problem.

Default thanks

OK, thank you very much. The contacts inside the timer were welded together. I filed them smooth with a small file and reassembled the timer and it works fine now.
Last question: is the repair I did likely to be very temporary or permanent? In other words, am I looking at buying a new timer in the near future?

Thanks again.

It's all about keeping the contacts clean. I would expect another 10 years of service. My machine I bought used in 1985. I fixed it myself in !986 and haven't touched it until last week. It's good for 10 more I feel. Good luck.
