When pressing on switch motor makes a loud inital "whirring" sound and tumbles. Now when starting it makes a loud noise and no longer tumbles at all. The start switch then shuts off and resets. Repairman says I need a new motor. Is that best fixed by him or is it possible for me to do it? Or is it something else?

You will need a new motor.

Because you have a gas dryer it is best if the repair is done by a qualified technician.
