Default Dryer belt
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MGD9206AWW
Age: 5 - 10 years

My dryer is making a scretching sound, I am guessing it is the belt. However last night I removed the door and front of dryer unscrewed the top and lifted it up, then turned the dryer to on. I observed another part that may be the culpret. The drum support roller may also be the problem. When it is running I can't really identify for sure which spinning element is creating the noise. What do you suggest? Should I start with replacing the belt to see if the problem is resolved?

I also read a thread from 7-12-07 that explains how to replace the belt on a Maytag dryer but I don't fully understand it. Based on what I can tell first the door and front need to come off the the two screws that release the top should be removed - right? These instructions also indicate that the lint screen should be removed. I don't understand the next part where it says to lean the front forward and pull up. Does this step expose the rear so you can slip the belt on and off? Does the belt slide on from the rear of the drum or the front?

Usually the new belt comes with replacement info, just ask the supplier. You will need to pull the front off and the drum support bracket, then remove drum. You must remove rear access panel to take belt off motor and pully.Make diagram how the belt was routed.
Basically, to put the belt on, place the flat of the belt on the drum and rout in front of the groove in the drum.
Then rout around the idler pully and on to the motor pully. You will quikly see there is now only ONE way the belt will go on with the proper tension. The belt ribbed side must be against motor pully. You have to remove rear access panel to do this.
