Default Dryer
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: PYE2300AYW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have a Maytag performa dryer that is 5 years old. It will not start, makes a faint ticking noise (from control panel). I've disassembled the front panel, checked the belt. The motor turns freely..the door button seems to be in order. The inside was dirty, but has all been cleaned out. I reassembled everything and the same faint ticking noise continues.

Any ideas?

Try to confirm that the ticking noise is coming from the timer motor. This will tell you that the motor is getting juice. so the door switch and thermal fuse are OK.
Does the timer gear turn
Could be the timer gear is jammed (could be some dirt or lint) or teeth are stripped

Try the unit in timed dry fluff temperature. This setting bypasses many of the components

Hi,

I would check ALL the thermo fuses.

No luck on the timer motor being clogged. I disassembled the knob and cleaned everything out and I still only get the faint ticking noise. I tried in the air fluff mode as well and got the same issue.

Is it the timer that is making the ticking noise?
Is the timer actually running?
Print out the wiring schematic
Set the temp to fluff
Manually rotate the timer to OFF, does the ticking stop?
All contacts in the timer should be open at OFF so the timer motor should not be getting power and ticking should stop.

In the fluff timed dry position the lower half from the resistor down does not apply because all of this has to do with temp /heater control.

Circuit path to start
NEUTRAL
THERMAL FUSE
DOOR SWITCH
MOTOR PROTECTOR
RUN and AUX WINDINGS
MOMENTARY PUSH TO START switch
contacts M and L
L1
Voila we have the motor running
Once the motor gets up to speed the switch in the motor disconnects the AUX (starter) winding

If your timer is OK then one of the components in the circuit path is causing the problem. The most likely culprit is the thermal fuse.
Do you have a volt/ohm meter
