Default Drum locked
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MDE9700AYW
Age: 1 - 4 years

Will not start... When button is pushed to start in just buzzes.. Then power turns off in 10 seconds. THE DRUM WILL TURN MANUALLY CLOCKWISE BUT ONLY WITH LOTS OF MUSCLE. How do I "open up" the back of the dryer to inspect the belts? Is it likely I can fix or should I just call service? Thanks, Earl

1-4 year old Neptune is worth having repaired, probably just bearings, it can be a bit involved getting this apart, and then the worse part for you is going to be getting it back together. Not hard if you've done it before, but to try to explain to someone over the internet could be difficult. The back doesn't come off, you have to go into it through the front.

Here's your parts breakdown so you can see it apart and try to look at it and decide if it looks like something you want to attempt yourself or not...

Check #10 Maytag Dependable Care
# 26 Maytag Dryer - motor problems

Since unit is less than 4 years old there is a good chance your motor is OK
It should turn easily by hand with the belt off
Check to make sure your blower wheel is not rubbing on anything
Then just go through and check all moving parts
Also the felt seals and plastic glides can cause problems

Can you do it? Depends on your DIY ability but it is not very difficult just take your time. It is always a good idea that when you have to work on your dryer take some extra time and clean/check your vent system.
