Default Drum hard to turn
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: DG303
Age: More than 10 years

Hi all,

A few days ago, my dryer started squeaking when it started up, and would not stop until it finished. I was not sure what it was. Today either the drum will turn for about 3-4 minutes and then stop, or not turn. I can hear the motor turn, and when I look in the back hole, I see the belt is ok. I can manually turn the drum (it is hard though) to get it started, but it still stops. I searched the forums, I see some talk of bearings - where are these, and how can I open the unit to inspect? One other thing, I noticed alot of lint lately around the dryer, and I inspected the exhaust line. I do not see any blockage, and the exhaust flow is good. Thanks for your help.

Update: I figured out how to open the front of the dryer, was able to determine that I have a couple of issues: The drum support roller and idler pully seem ok, I will grease them. The drive belt is somewhat frayed and a little cracked, I will replace. The glides are worn, replace. The rear felt seal is all shifted, I will replace. I have determined that the overall problem is the motor. When I start the dryer, the motor buzzes, but does not turn, when I let go of the timer, it stops buzzing. If I start the dryer, then manually turn the motor pully, it turns and seems ok (as there is no load on the motor). Now the question - Do I get the motor rebuilt, do I replace the motor, or taking in to account the other items I need to replace, do I scrap it and buy a new dryer?
